Leaving a Legacy
One of the most powerful and long-lasting ways you can help the Sleep Apnoea Trust is to leave an affordable gift in your Will. Leaving a gift doesn’t cost you in your lifetime, but your legacy will be the continued support of patients, their partners and their families across the UK.
Because we don’t receive the money now but, in the future, it means that we can support future generations. Gifts can be a lump sum or a percentage of what you leave behind, so can be affordable no matter what your circumstances. A gift could even be a specific item, such as jewellery, or a piece of art.
Leaving a legacy to charity also has benefits to those who inherit from you. The value of any legacy you leave to charity is taken off *before* Inheritance Tax is calculated. If 10% or more of your estate is left to charity, your Inheritance Tax rate may be reduced. For more information please see: Tax relief when you donate to a charity: Leaving gifts to charity in your will – GOV.UK
And if I don’t have a Will? If you die without a valid Will your estate is distributed under the existing Intestacy Law. This has a strict order of the direct family members who can inherit. Therefore, unmarried partners, step-children and friends would be excluded. Writing your Will ensures that your wishes are met.
Should I write a Will? Making a Will is not just about sorting out your finances. A Will ensures that your final wishes are clear, and that your possessions and property will be distributed according to your wishes.
What if I’ve already written my Will? If you already have a Will but now want to include a gift to the Sleep Apnoea Trust, you can do so by choosing to write a Codicil, which is simply an addition to an existing Will instead of rewriting it completely.
Your legacy, no matter how small, helps us reach and support more people affected by Sleep Apnoea.
