17 August 2026 – DVLA announces new online service

DVLA has significantly expanded its online service for checking how medical conditions may affect their driving and, where required, notifying DVLA online. The enhanced service now covers around 1,600 medical conditions, a substantial increase from the small number previously available online. This makes it easier and more convenient for car and motorcycle licence holders (Group 1) to keep their driving record up to date.

Using the online service reduces the need for paper forms and helps applications to be processed more efficiently. Drivers using the online service can save up to ten days compared with paper applications.

The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and guides users through each step of the process. Drivers can also track the progress of their application online, and those renewing a medical licence can renew their photo at the same time as part of a single application.

Further improvements planned this year [2026] will extend online medical notifications into additional customer journeys. This will allow drivers renewing their licence at age 70, first-time provisional licence applicants, and customers whose licence was previously surrendered or revoked, to benefit from online medical notifications as part of those transactions.
